First, I'd like to say hello to everyone, as this is my first post. I'd also like to personally praise the guys responsible for giving Tribes 2 another chance, and create a golden image in their likeness which I will offer virgin sacrifices to on a daily basis (shouldn't be hard to find them, I play Tribes 2 and WoW afterall).

Let's face it, Tribes 2 is definitely not a newbie friendly game. There are several nuances to learn, and when starting a game that already has quite a following of veterans, you're going to be respawning quite often. I typed up this guide on another forum, and it simply made sense to add it to this one. Everything is from memory, but it's reasonably accurate. This guide also assumes that you're playing BASE T2, but the majority of it applies to Classic as well.

What is Tribes 2?

Other than being a direct sequal to Starsiege: Tribes, Tribes 2 is a fast pased team oriented FPS game.

How is Tribes 2 different from other FPS games?

Other than being extremely team oriented, Tribes 2 also allows players to utilize jet packs to take to the air at any time. This makes the game much more 3-dimensional than your average FPS title.

Okay, I'll give it a shot, what should I know?

Glad you asked:

Beginner's guide

Armors

The three armor types are commonly known as light, medium, and heavy armor (sometimes called jugs, juggies, juggernaughts). The main advantages of each armor are pretty self explanatory.

-Light is the quickest but takes the least amount of damage. Lights can carry three weapons. They are the only armor that can use the cloak pack, as well as the laser rifle (which requires an energy pack). Lights can pilot any vehicle.

-Medium is the in between. Mediums can carry four weapons, and can use the missile launcher. They can pilot any vehicle except for the grav cycle. They can carry any pack except for the cloak pack.

-Heavy is slow, but can take a beating. They can carry five weapons, and can use the missile launcher and the mortar. They cannot pilot any vehicle, but can ride in the passenger seats of the havoc, or the tailgunner seat of the bomber.

Vehicles

There are six vehicles in Tribes 2. Each one can be used to be a huge asset for the entire team when use properly. Three vehicles are ground based, and three can fly. Every vehicle can be used to ram people to death.

-The grav cycle, also called the wildcat, has the highest potential speed in the game because of the game physics, but is generally slower than the shrike. It's a very lightly armored vehicle, but because of the way it hugs the ground and it's small size, it's a hard target to hit with missles. The grav cycle is not armed with weapons in BASE Tribes 2, but has a chain gun in Classic.

-The behemoth tank is very well armored, and actually fairly agile despite behind someone slow. The tank has two seats, one for the driver, and one for the gunner. Tanks have two weapons, the chain gun, which does great damage but has a huge spread, and the mortar.

-The Jericho MPB (Mobile Point Base) is slow, and can take a huge beating before being destroyed. The MPB is only useful when deployed. It has a missile turret on it, and an inventory station in the back. Despite being very durable, it's also a huge target for the opposing team. They should not be left alone. Also, when deployed, the MPB's driver seat is not usable by members of the opposite team, but it takes a few seconds for it to deploy after someone jumps out of the driver's seat.

-The shrike is a quick and agile air to air/ground fighter. It's lightly armored. It's equipped with duel blasters on the front that are capable of tearing through anything pretty quickly.

-The heavy bomber is only slightly better armored than the shrike, and it's slower, and a much larger target. Other than the pilot, there are two other positions in a bomber. The bombedier drops bombs, and can fire a blaster turret from the bomber's belly, but the turret is limited to objects underneath the bomber. The tailgunner protects the bomber by firing his own weapons at anyone chasing it, and by dropping flares to protect his crew from missiles.

-The havoc transport is only slightly better armored than the bomber, and it's slower and a larger target. Other than the pilot, there are a total of 5 passenger positions on the vehicle. It's primary use is the transport of a group of heavies to the enemy base to attack it's defenses and assets.

Weapons

There are a total of ten different hand held weapons in Tribes 2, along with mines, and five different types of hand grenades. The blaster, ELF, laser rifle, and shocklance all require no ammunition and use the player's energy instead. Also, with any projectile weapon (the laser, shocklance, and ELF all do not use projectiles), the projectiles take on the momentum of the player. So if you're strafing to the side when you fire a weapon, the projectile will drift to the side as well.

-The blaster is Tribes' pea shooter. It's projectiles can ricochet off of walls, and also ignores shield packs. It has a decent rate of fire, low damage per projectile, and is most effective indoors because of the nature of the weapon. The blaster can also hurt the player using it if the shots ricochet back at them.

-The laser rifle is Tribes' sniper rifle. The amount of damage dealt is directly related to the amount of energy the player has when he fires, so it's best to fire fully charged shots. The beam is bright red, and draws a line straight back to the sniper; it's best to shoot and move. Headshots deal more damage with this weapon. Only usable by light armor.

-The shocklance is a short ranged weapon, only effective up to 16 meters. Hitting a player in the back with this weapon guarantees a kill, unless the target has an active shield pack. The weapon also sports a knockback effect, and can be used to flip over flying vehicles by a skilled player.

-The ELF is primarily a support weapon. It deals no damage, but rapidly drains energy from the target, leaving them vulnerable. The electrical arc locks to it's target, so it's very easy to aim, but has a limited range of 30-35 meters (as I recall).

-The spinfusor disc launcher is basically a fancy looking rocket launcher. It fires a disc that explodes on contact. It has a low rate of fire, decent damage, and the blast has a good knockback. A small gimmick to the weapon is that discs can be skipped off of water and magma at a low angle.

-The plasma rifle is similar to the spinfusor in many ways. Lower damage per shot, faster rate of fire, smaller blast radius, and no knockback. The nature of the weapon makes it best suited for indoor use, and taking down base assets.

-The grenade launcher is pretty self explanatory. It has a rate of fire slightly slower than the plasma rifle, blast radius and damage slightly more then the spinfusors, and fires in an arc. The grenade takes a second or two to arm, and bounces off of any surface until it does.

-The chain gun is also pretty self explanatory. It fires projectiles in a cone at a fast rate, and does low damage per projectile. It's a great weapon for air-born targets, but is a poor choice for indoor combat. The chain gun takes a moment to "spin up" before it starts firing.

-The missile launcher fires a heat seeking missile at a locked target (red reticle). It can also "dumb fire" while it's locking on (green reticle), and under water. It does high damage, has a very low rate of fire, and a small blast radius with a small knockback. Base sensors, base turrets, all vehicles, and any personel with a high heat signature (the red bar under your energy bar, when it's flashing) can be locked on. Missiles are diverted by flares. Only usable by medium and heavy armor.

-The mortar is the grenade launcher's bigger brother in every way. Slower rate of fire, more damage, larger blast radius, longer range. Only usable by heavy armor.

There are also hand grenades and land mines that every armor can carry. Anyone can carry up to three land mines, and the number of hand grenades depends on the armor you're using.

-Land mines are fairly simple. Drop one, give it a second to arm itself, avoid it from then on. You'll often find that land mines are marked with a beacon which shows up as a marker on your HUD. Your flag is also almost always mined. You can destroy a mine by damaging it. Land mines cannot be placed too closely to one another.

-Frag grenades are the most common grenade seen. You spawn with five of these. Toss the grenade, it explodes after a couple seconds.

-Concussion grenades do no damage, but can knock players around quite a bit, and can disarm them and knock the flag away from flag carriers.

-Flash grenades do no damage. They can blind anyone within range for a couple of seconds, including team mates and the person using them.

-Flares are used to divert missiles. They serve no other real purpose, but are very important for what they do.

-Cameras are not really grenades of course, but they take up the grenade slot. You can deploy a camera that the team can use to monitor an area. They're often used in conjunction with a satchel charge pack as a trap. Some players have even started using them as a small platform to stand on, or place land mines on.

I am trying to find if anyone has done a damage analysis for the weapons in Tribes 2 (ie Tribes Next) or the preceding Starsiege: Tribes game.

Basically looking for something like https://web.archive.org/web/20120201085557/http://ph-matt.dyndns.org/~matt/weapondamage.php but done for the old games instead of Vengeance/Ascend.

I'm curious how the weapon damages related to each other in the old games compared to the new ones, and knowing the exact numbers would help with things like building them to RP with in GURPS.

So why tribes2 tactics evolved in the way that doesn't take advantage of this fact? Why don't we use jericos as outposts and swarm the enemy base in juggi armors? It would certainly be much funnier than it is now... isn't it? ;D

Just a few little but IMPORTANT facts that can make life much easier in tribes 2.

I: Deploy LANDSPIKE turrets on the flattest surface possible, OTHERWISE they will NOT HIT A DAMN THING.
Hojou42 actually made a video about it, standing in front of wrongly placed turrets that are failing to hit him:
http://s1176.photobucket.com/user/hojou42/media/TribesTurrets.mp4.html
btw here is Hojou's guide on placing turrets:
http://www.tribesnext.com/forum/index.php?topic=2317.0

II. In the annoying case if an enemy steals the Jericho, DONT GO CRAZY SHOOTING AT the vehicle, grab your CHAINGUN, and facing the vehicle's front side aim slightly above the enemy driver's head. You will be able to kill him in his seat. The same goes for the Bomber and the Tank: a tailgunner can kill an enemy in the pilot/bomber seat using the same method.

III. Once you updated the Jericho turret with plasma/AA turret barrel, it will be remembered. So if you are planning to go for a trip in a Jericho, FIRST OF ALL UPGRADE the turret to plasma. In the annoying event if someone attacks you, you can just jump out of the vehicle and after a few moments the enemy will have to face a plasma turret.

IV. There actually is a teleport station at every vehicle pad. It is a small circle near the vPad ramp and it teleports you immediately near the deployed Jericho. Use it sometimes, it can be fun.

Recently I've noticed alot of hostility against me on Goons Haven. Partly because I'm an peasant asshole it seems but mostly because of my playing style. This post is really to help other players who like to O Snipe (offensive sniping),vPad sniping (Vehicle Pad) and even iPad sniping (the latest product from Apple..sniping inventory stations) who may be put off from doing it by people crying and complaining..but don't listen to them. Here are some very good reasons to do it...

First of.. O Sniping... People seem to get very upset if you happen to use a Sniper Rifle for offensive purposes. Of course they can't do much apart from cry calling it lame and saying you suck. I know, its very shocking to use a weapon like a sniper rifle for offensive reasons

Now there is nothing better like a thsword bomber diving for a bombing run manned with a crew knows its job - and there is nothing worse than a bomber crew who don't.
So I take the courage now, for the shake of newbies who just dont know the how-to for using this most powerful weapon of tribes 2 - the Thundersword bomber!

(its a very good idea to have the pilotmodII script, its very useful, get it from here: http://www.astrolorf.com/t2scripts.htm)

Pilot
First of all, use your command hud, set a waypoint at the enemy vehicle station in order not to miss it. For the most successful bombing run, pilot should achieve a good positional advantage.
Its like this: you should fly at high altitude, attack from behind the base and keep the Thsword's energy at maximum when time comes to bombing, for the vehicle is most vulnerable when above the enemy base, and you will need the energy for the shields.
If you have a missile locked on you, you should remember the magic number: 288, for this is the speed at which missiles travel at. If you fly faster, you will simply outrun the missile, if not, you should! To gain some speed you can either use the aferburner, or dive. If there is water on the map - submerge, the missile will lose track! This can spare the tailgunner some important flares. Also notice, that if energy is full, shields can bear a missile impact with the vehicle not injured.
If you have a SHRIKE (the most annoying pests) locked on your tails, then it's fair to say you suck. Now this is very important: DON'T PANIC! So dont try to run away by using afrerburn - the shrike is faster, and it will just trigger its most innate instincts. Besides, you will need the energy for the sields - though it wont last long if you begin to receive shoots. In fact, your only hope is the tailgunner and the bomber. The tailgunner will try to launch a missile on the shike, so DONT TUG THE DAMN MOUSE, try help the tailgunner and the bomber in aiming, and keep the vehicle's movement as straight and smooth as possible, and use the strafe left/right buttons to confuse the shrike instead of the mouse. Dive slowly and gently, so that the bomber can use the blaster - it wont help much, but will confuse the shrike a little bit. And pray. In fact, taking out a shrike is not that impossible, I've had an experienced crew once, and we succeeded to blow up two chasing shrikes. And yeah, you can ask for "vehicle escort" any time

Bomber
Always be prepared. Dont bomb if flying too low, it'll destroy the vehicle. Use the targeting laser: it will give a special waypoint to the pilot for high altitude bombing. Enjoy the sight (and you will get all the scores for the kills

Tailgunner
Without a tailgunner, the thsworder will not stand a chance. Its a very important position. As a tailgunner you should equip heavy armour, missile launcher, chaingun, ELF projector, a repair pack and FLARE GRENADES. Your task is: watch the sky, if you see an enemy shrike, lock your missile on it, out of missiles: use your chaingun, out of chaingun, use your ELF. Drop flare grenades if one or more missiles are heading towards you. Dont drop flares if the ship seems to outrun the missile (at 288km/h), or if there is only one missile following you. You have a repair pack, so you will be able to repair the veh in mid air even if it suffers a missile impact. Be clever when using the repair pack, the repair ray also inherits velocity from the bomber, so be patient. Some will say to use sensor jammer pack instead of repair. Dont listen to them, i fount it quite unnecessary, and useless compared to the advantages of the repair pack.

And Good hunting to you all!

Well, I've heard a lot of complaints about certain weapons/packs over the past few YEARS... So now is the chance to tell everyone Which do you think is the stupidest/noobiest?

Just a small explanation on the options:

1. Lots of complaints. Chews people up too fast, too accurate for a CG, too much damage per bullet... I've heard them all.

2. My personal enemy. Ridiculous fire rate, ridiculous damage, huge blast radius. WILL RESULT IN USERS BEING HUNTED DOWN.

3. I'm actually surprised this one made it on the list. Lots of people complaining, calling it useless and such. It does Spinfusor damage with the bonus "behind-the-back" instakill. Plus unlimited ammo. The biggest complaint I've heard in a game is that the range is too long.

4. I see the usefulness indoors. Lots of explosions and such. The people outside bug me. Not sure why, they just do.

5. Apparently this annoys the crap out of people. It's the only weapon that gets through shields now. And THAT pisses off the shielders. You know the risks, now open up and suck on some glowing red balls.

6. This is more of a "useless" and only in one situation. The HEAVY LOVE standard loadout has nothing that uses energy, and if you're trying to use it alone and duel someone with that loadout, you're asking to hug the "big green boomie." Other than that, I think it can be pretty useful. Stop carriers and drain shields and such.

7. I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH THIS. IF YOU CAN'T HIT A FLYING TARGET, AND THAT'S YOUR CLOUD, YOU GO RIGHT OFF AND DAMN WELL MANUFACTURE A SILVER LINING. This is more for people who have been killed by it one too many times.

Well, by this time you've posted your votes. Probably. So why did you vote what you voted? Any commentary on what I've mentioned? Please, do tell. *sips Coke* It's not like I have anything better to do...

Hey guys, I finally made an account here... Thanks to you guys at tribesnext, and everyone who is keeping the game alive.

One of the roles I've enjoyed playing for years is turret monkey. Ya, i'm weird... I've spent some time doing it in the ladders, and I still do it when pubbing now and then. I like to think I'm pretty good at it, and I'm pretty fast.

Almost daily I see people deploying turrets who seem confused about how they work. Usually I just blow up the poorly placed turrets and replace them myself. But when people don't understand why i'm blowing up their turrets and replacing them, they get annoyed and TK me. Of course no one reads the chat, and when I try to explain to someone why his turret deployment sucks he completely misses it and continues deploying, wasting assets, and getting angry at me for trying to fix them...

There are TWO basic things that you need to understand if you want to do more than just waste your teams assets and your time deploying turrets:

1. Turrets MUST be on LEVEL SURFACES if you want them to actually hit anything - both landspikes and spiderclamps. If you place turrets on slopes THEY CANNOT AIM effectively and they will ALWAYS miss, unless some poor guy just happens to cross their line of fire by accident.

Don't believe me? Check out this video of me standing still right next to three turrets which can't hit me bacause they are deployed on a slope.

2. Turrets NEED sensors. If you are going to deploy turrets, why not make them useful and give them a decent chance of hitting enemies? Turrets already have a built in sensor that detects enemies and tells them where to shoot, but pulse sensors will significantly extend their range.

Sensors should be placed at a distance from deployable turrets (AND base turrets), so the turrets can see, aim, and kill people who would otherwise be out of range. This becomes really important when you consider fast moving targets: often an enemy is able to enter and exit a turret's default range so fast, that by the time it comes online and turns to aim the enemy is already gone. By placing sensors in the distance along routes the enemies are using, turrets come online and begin tracking the enemy while they are still out of range, ready to fire as soon as they get close enough. Once they get in range, it is already online and pointing at them, instead of just starting to power up while they fly past unharmed.

So take a few xtra seconds when deploying landspikes and spiderclamps to find that flat spot. Once you take the time to look, you'll notice most map makers have put small ledges and flat spots on the slopes around the bases - this is why. Take the time to find them so your turrets actually hit something.

And once you get some turrets out, extend their range by putting pulse sensors in the distance around your base as well at key spots like the flag...

Just don't do it.

Use the grenade launcher instead; its quicker, more accurate, and has a faster reload time. Plus, you are less likely to TK your teammates and your base's shit. My HoF/HD loadout doesn't even have a mortar in it. True story.

Still want insta-gib power of the mortar indoors?

Use SSminenade script. It (simultaneously) throws then detonates a mine and grenade..used in combo with the grenade launcher and/or plasma rifle while fighting indoors its power cannot be denied. Vets hate this tactic used against them, but goes a long way to evening up the playing field between you and them: a plas/nade launcher combo with this script gives you fast reload times (unlike the mortar) and you wont need to be terribly accurate. Just make sure to back away so you don't blow yourself up!

Hope that helps.

from all my time playing tribes 2 there ways iv learned to get ready for accusal online play but like most post theirs gonna be lots of people ho will agree and yet disagree so feel free to tell how you think new players can train up on the tribes 2.

my way of getting better at the tribes 2 is do bot matches for a couple days (exploring normal, classic tribes 2 maps) and start out with no bots just get to know your surroundings from weapons to packs to what base equipment does what to manding the command circuit to even control the turrets with the command circuit. ( not that your gonna be doing that often of course but sometimes its useful) then see what you can do (still with no bots)
try some trick and routes you have seen on youtube or herd about in the forum such as a flag run with a strike
this video tribes 2 inside will show you what that is.

even get with a friend and try flag throwing to see if you can do that. but theirs more than just flag runs.
you can do stuff from flag cover in heavy (Juggernaut armor) to scout sniping (lazer rifle and energy pack) and scout assassin (shocklanc and cloak pack)

see what armors suit you best and with what task you can accomplish in em (you learn better with task when you have bots so keep that in mind)

then also see what vehicles you can control and see if theirs any task you can accomplish in em (bomber runs as tail gunner to havoc heavy assault run

k now you can try bots see how you can do now remember you can set the difficulty level of the bots right when you start the match so experiment with this to find your difficulty level your pleased with.

now when you feel your ready try to go online or if you wanna try playing against another player ho has about as much skill as you or know some one ho plays near by use the land line connection in the solo & lan tribes 2 down load you got. remember a player is better then an ai .the ai you fight are on fixed movement grids a player moves freely across the map so his/hers tactics will change daring game unlike bots. so see if you can get friends or family members ho play tribes to join on a private tribes online server or lan server.

happy hunting

remember if any one experienced is readying this feel free to provide tips of your own for new comers.

(first guide! yay! watch this suck!)

For those who don't know, siege is, read the book. Oh, wait, nobody reading this played the original...

Siege is where there's two teams, one on offense and the other... well...

The round ends either when time runs out or the team on offense "captures" the base by touching the control switch. Then the players switch sides. The second team MUST beat the score set by the first team to win the match.

The basics:

DEFENSE: the generators usually power the shields that guard the switch. People on offense will go for the generators just to get them down for a few seconds, so they will usually ignore you. So a shield pack usually isn't what you're going for unless the base is BIG and you're in the way. Stick with repair packs. When a generator goes down repair it as fast as possible.

That being said, you must know your base very well. Some bases have side or back entrances that allow people to capture the base very quickly. These are the places you need your juggernauts with shield packs.

As far as setup: Get out your remote inventories. These make it easier to deploy/replace/get repair packs. Get motion sensors and cameras all over the place. Deploy a turret in the back entrance so people can know when someone is coming. Most of the rest should go in the generator room or the just outside the switch room. Get one or two people in the switch room whose sole purpose is to kill anyone who comes near. Go easy on the mines to the gen room or anywhere people walk frequently. This will just piss off your teammates.

Loadout: Generally a good thing to do is set up with an Annoying Bastard loadout with an ELF instead of a blaster. You can use this to drain shields or ground lights, and it drains cloak packs, too. Therefore, this works whether you're in the generator room or the back hallway. Plus, in the back hallway, when you're carrying a repair pack, people don't have to go back to the inventories as often. As much as I hate to say it, Grenade Launchers are quite effective in defending those narrow hallways. SO ARE MORTARS.

Another good loadout is the standard Juggernaut Defense loadout. Good damage, you're indoors anyway, and your weapons have a nice spread. Plus you get the shield pack.

OFFENSE: Get those remote inventories out as fast as you can. This will help people who take damage in the aforementioned halls to go back a bit, repair, kit up, and get back to their ass-whooping.

Setup: Not much, you're on offense. The best you can usually do that's effective is get out your remote inventory stations. Some people deploy some turrets, but I've found that unless you're a god at staying alive in an enemy base, they won't help you much.

Loadout: Most work, actually. The plasma rifle is quite effective against generators. The only pack I disapprove of is the sensor jammer, you'll probably be in narrow halls most of the time. The defenders will think: Hm, who's the enemy, could it be the guy with the different color uniform and no red triangle above his head? hm...

Aside from that, shields are usually good if you want to bum-rush the enemy. Repair packs won't do you much good unless you manage to set up a base within their base. Cloaks can get you in, but usually not out.

Now for strategy. On defense, as I've already discussed, either defend that hallway or keep those generators running. Otherwise you might as well not bother playing. Get turrets up with motion sensors. even if the turret doesn't hit anything, the fact that it activates tells you where and when your enemy is coming.

On offense, there's often a generator that protects another generator. Send in someone to take out the first generator and have someone wait at the shield of the second generator. That one will take out the second generator, which usually powers the force field around the capture point. Also, the first people in should find any motion sensors and cameras and destroy them for any second wave that might be coming in.

This topic mostly serves as a chance to vent, I was annoyed at the ineffectiveness of the opposing team recently in a siege match. You people need to read this. It was painful.

For everyone else, I hope you learned something Feel free to add anything you think I've missed. Maybe weapons that are surprisingly effective. Remember that most things in here are opinion.

I'm a new player and i can't figure it out, how to deal with 1-3 people constantly coming to our base in juggernaut armor and killing our gens along whith anything else they see. Killing 1 is not much of a problem, although by the time I repair the gens he's usually skiing back to our base. When there's 2 or more, gens pretty much stay down the whole game. They don't even bother to bring an inv station.

I'm already trying to be a bit less of an idiot by not bringing them repair kits but that's not nearly enough.
There are few solutions i've heard/thought of, like

1) having a defence, or teamwork
...ha...ha...

2) being a cloaker with shocklance inside base
effectivness varies with skill of the opposition. After a while they start mortaring every corner, or bringing shield packs, or making the basement an improvized pool filled with plasma. They tend to spin around and stand back to the wall too. They usually live long enough to fire mortar at our gens a few times, which is more than they can take.

3) finding suitable corners and camping with satchel pack
on the positive side, satchel can be placed so that it's not seen untill it's "almost" too late, and survival rate is very low. But it does tend to get destroyed with mortars after few successfull uses.
Most effective way i've found for a noob like me.

4) pretending to be solo LightDefence and killing them on their way to our base
Lights do seem to have advantage over juggernauts in the open... but with my skilllevel it's 50/50 at best. And doesn't work if there is more than 1 rapist.

5) Leaving the gens down and using deployable inv stations and MPB
in my eyes this is very tempting. They can't rape gens for points if they're already down. People don't seem to use CC so sensors being down doesn't bother most people. The only point of turrets seems to be delaying shrieks by few seconds as they shoot them from out of range.
I'm however doubtfull team i'm on would see it this way, and there's always a newbie like me that thinks repairing is a good way to help.

Ello Fellow tribes 2 players

My name is The Laser, some of you may have seen me laser rifling it up in Goon Haven if not look for a red light hitting someone, trace it back to its source and there's a good chance we will now have met . Ive played tribes since 2002, multiple mods, multiple servers, even multiple aliases which i will not be publishing here. Something common to every mod and server I've ever played is a hit-scan weapon usually held by a light armor, usually long or infinitely ranged, usually energy based. For some reason all these servers I've always gravitated towards the sniping side and i feel like all this has made me a pretty good user of the original hit-scan, the laser rifle.

im going to skip the basic properties of the laser rifle because for the few who don't already know them they can be found in the stickied noob guide above.

so with out further ado lets get to the first section: how to effectively and accurately aim and shoot the laser rifle.

There are two parts to aiming the Laser Rifle, one is knowing where to aim and the other is aiming at that spot and shooting. Very, very fortunately the right spot to aim isn't always simply the body or head of your enemy. Despite the fact that the speed of the laser is infinite it is still necessary to lead a moving target. Im sure almost all of you know this, and the reason for it, basically, is that there is lag between when you fire the shot and the time that the server realizes that you have done so. the instant you fire the shot your client sends the server a message to create the beam between you and whatever object may be in its path. while this message is being sent the target you were aiming at may have moved. for this reason it is necessary to shoot at the spot that your target will be when the server creates the beam, not your client. As i said half the battle of landing a shot is correctly predicting where your target will be when the server, not your client creates the beam. and when it comes to predicting the movements of a target there are again two parts. the speed of the target and the direction of the target's movement. AGAINST COMMON SENSE DISTANCE IS NOT A FACTOR. As I said earlier once the server receives the direction from your computer the laser shot is created and it exists instantly between you and the first object blocking it, the means that no matter how far away the target is you are still leading the same amount because the target will still have moved the same amount if it is going 50 kph 100 meters away or going 50 kph 1000 meters away. Also because of the hit-scan nature of the laser rifle all that matters is movement relative to you, this means when thinking of where the target will be when the server creates the beam you need only think in two dimensions. again this goes against common sense because you would think if the target was moving away from you as well as perpendicular to you, you would have to lead farther than if they were moving only perpendicularly, and vice versa when they are moving perpendicularly and towards you. but because the speed of the laser is infinite movement in the 3rd dimension of depth is irrelevant. All that matters is speed relative to you so any foray into the third dimension will cause the targets speed relative to you to decrease so that you need to give the target a smaller lead. If you didnt understand that block of text think about it like this: when sniping pretend like the game is a flat picture and as objects move across it don't think about their real speed, only their speed measured by how quickly they are moving across the 2D surface. so even if they were at 1000kph moving only in the 3rd dimension, directly towards or away from you they would be moving 0 kph relative to your view. From their all it is is looking at what direction they are moving and the spot that they will be in once the server creates the beam is a few pixels further in that direction, more or less pixels based on how high that 2D speed is.
As i said before the second half of the battle is actually taking a shot with your reticle aimed at that predicted location of your target. the best way to do this is not track that spot with your reticle but instead to take into account the current path of the predicted target and place your reticle into that pathway, once the predicted target is the lined up with your reticle, well you just click the ol' mouse button. the mouse tells the computer, and the computer tells the server and congratulations you just pulled off a VGCS

Ok now for the second and final section: sniping tactics, ill give a guide to defensive sniping and offensive sniping here.

the single most common use of the laser rifle is defensive sniping, this is simply using the sniper rifle to shoot any players attacking your base, its assets, or its flag. all too often the players doing this are afraid to do anything but stand in cement with nothing but their rifles out, taking potshots and any players they see. this is really inefficient. instead of this you should constantly be moving around to increase your view, give yourself easier shots, and also use other weapons, for me that's usually a spinfusor and shocklance. instead of standing still basically you should have a different routine for killing each armor type as well as a list of priorities when multiple targets present themselves. whenever you see a heavy armor you need to immediately begin to move toward him if he doesn't see you coming, keep moving toward him as sneakily as possible staying out of his line of sight, if he is focused and you are sneaky well... backlance. game over. if he sees you while you are still far away start conserving energy and sniping as you move toward him using alot of skiing and running, not jetting. if he starts trying to engage you then you've already effectively ended his run because a skilled scout with laser rifle and spinfusor can easily take down a jugger. the second he starts shooting at you stop using all energy and start sniping him over and over while avoiding his fire with easy side steps. there's nothing he can really do in this situation if he advances, retreat. If he retreats, advance, if he starts running the hell away as fast as he can pursue while using limited energy and continue sniping. Only chase so far as it is reasonable to do. if 5 other enemies are attacking your base you have better things to be doing but if he is about to die and no one is in sight of your base, sure finish off the kill. if the juggernaught in question has a shield pack however, he won't be as effective at asset destruction but he can absorb sniper fire indefinitely with proper activation and deactivation of the shield. again try for the backlance, but this time if he sees you start sniping and advancing but once your near you should switch to the disc/lance instead of the laser now just get closer and start discing. now you need to put alot of pressure on his shield, consecutive mine-discs can drain the shield quickly, you should be hitting every time because he can't jet then just start in with auto fire discs hopefully again hitting every time. make sure not to waste all your energy in the air above his head as he can just wait for you to touch down and grenade you and make sure not to get too close or he will just chew you in half with the chaingun. When fighting sheilded juggs i always try to only use the first half of my energy bar, saving the second half for emergencies when the choice is either to jet or to die. as long as you dont let up pressure, hitting very consistently and continuously keep a good distance while moving he shouldn't be too hard to kill.

now onto killing assaults.. this is easy only go for the backlance if you are very close to them or if they are giving the indication that they will be staying in a small area for a while if they see you or if you are far away from them when you see them then start advancing without much energy use sniping all the way. do as much damage as you can on the way there and then again if they engage you keep your distance and finish them off with a few more snipes. if he shields use the same method as with a juggernaught, again like with juggernaughts if he ignores you switch to the spin and lance and get fairly close and finish him off quickly if he runs just stand still and snipe him until he's out of sight hopefully you will finish him off before he can get out of your sight because full out chasing him (assaults are pretty fast to) will end up with you wasting alot of time for the tiny reward of killing an nonthreatening assault.

as for scouts.. considering they have the least health they are almost always the easiest and least time consuming to kill. scouts are rarely seen on offense, if they are offensing at all they are either going to be cloaked, shielded, or o sniping. killing a cloaker is easy, once you see the foot prints victory is only a mine disc away, if you miss or get a partial hit just use intuition, follow the footsteps, keep discing... not too hard. shielders are only useful if they get inside your base in which case either leave them to a HD or switch your armor to HD because you simply will NOT kill them while indoors in standard LD. outdoor shielders are basically decoys, they aren't effective against outdoor assets and if you know what to do they will lose in a duel to a normal LD. use only your discs and mines, keep your bar above one half except in emergencies, keep discing while avoiding fire they die easy when attacked correctly. as for the o snipers they come in two varieties, the laser turret who forgets that he is allowed to get attacked back or the asset attacking, defense killing, duel winning variety killing a laser turret is as easy as shooting a disc, switching and shooting a laser just before the disc makes contact or if your pretty close go for the mine disc. killing a good o sniper is going to either be a snipe fight, in which you both are keeping your distance and sniping at each other or a normal duel in which you are both using all your weapons staying pretty near each other, trying to kill each other. the basic strategy here is laser your target before he sees you to get a good lead on him then either advance or continue in the snipe fight, if you advance just use discs when your both in the air then if you can skii out of disc/nade range without using energy you can stop for potshots every once and a while. for any scouts who are moving but not engaging you stand still and snipe them out of existence (when i stay still i dont mean it literally, just move around enough between shots that you arent a still target but your still not trying to advance or retreat.)

when it comes to vehicles go for the shocklance if they are air based and you can fly into range or if they are out of range just help damage them with a couple laser shots. if there is someone spamming mortars out of a tank turret without a driver sneakily hop into the driver seat and drive away if it has driver then just keep discing and mine discing but you will definitely need help with a driven tank.

to kill flag cappers dont just go for the long distance lasering because even if you kill them someone else on their team could just pick up the flag when the first carrier dies. instead chase them down, using disc jumps if necessary and just go for discs and skiing snipes until they die.

also when multiple targets present themselves you have to weigh how much damage they are doing and how much time it will take to kill them. the perfect example of extreme high priority is a jugg with an inventory on his back with one snipe worth of health left entering the door of your base. this guy could singlehandedly destroy your base, turn it into his own base, even set up turrets so... not killing him would be terrible for your team. also he has almost no health left so the time it takes to kill him is close to none, just line up a shot and kill him. the opposite would be a jugger with full health and a shield mortar spamming your base at max mortar range. going all the way over there killing his shield damaging him maybe even dying in the process, is not worth the time that your base is unprotected unless no one else is around when it comes to prioritzing.. basically use common sense.

yes sniping on defense is alot more complicated than standing still with a rifle.

o-sniping: flip your shocklance for plasma. use plasma rifle to kill turrets, sensors even outdoor generators. when you see deployed invs landspikes, or outdoor regular inventories just use discs and lasers, save your plasma for stronger shields.

Tip: if you are alone with an inv damage it until its lights turn out and throw a mine on it. this will cause any eager beavers running onto the station to trip the mine exploding the inv, the combined explosions will kill the poor fool.

your other job is to snipe out anyone who either has one snipe or less of health or is a light defense, dont waste your shots on some heavy defense or a turret farmer who is on his way to a protected inventory anyway. snipe at light defenses only whenever there are no near-death players, or killable assets but if they see and attack you, certainly fight back.

whenever you are engaged by a defense duel him, draw him away from his base, waste his time and hopefully kill him. taking this time is worth it because a light defense could potentially be killing incoming base rapers, or asset destroyers with a single lance, finishing off incoming cappers with a quick laser, or otherwsise seriously impeding the offensive momentum of your team, basically getting rid of the other teams light d is definitely worth getting rid of yourself for a bit. even if you draw him away from his base for 30 seconds and die in the process the rape train may have started rolling and it could takes minutes to stop it.

Note: every time you see a standing scout just disc-laser or plasma-laser.

good luck sniping, try out both offensive and defensive sniping, try the techniques i talked about, whatever you do good luck and ill see you out there.

thanks for reading... i'm sure i made mistakes here and there and if anyone can inform me of them it would be appreciated - im not talking about grammar i'll handle that by myself.

It is copypasta from goons forums:

I see growing interest in bombing, so nawbs, here some important TIPS:

Pilot and Bombardier ALWAYS take:
-Medium Armor
-Flares
-Repair* or ammo** pack
-Missle launcher

* - at least one member of a crew must have repair pack
** - to be able to toss more flares, missles for TG (make bind for tossing ammo and nades)

Tailgunner ALWAYS take:
-Heavy Armor
-Flares
-Missle launcher
-Chaingun
-adequate pack INV/SJ/REP/AMMO (mostly in this order, from most useful to sometimes useless)

If You are TG:
REPORT FLARE COUNT EVERY TURN (while bomber is turning to make another bombing)
You can do it by teamsay that:
I've got x flares left.
or
x flares left
or
x flares
or
x

where x is a nuber of flares that you have while you write it

You can also report missle count, it's useful too.

Try to do not waste flares, when bomber is leaving "hot area". Try to throw them only if missle can damage bomber hull (not shield). Of course in "hot area" sometimes its good to throw flares whithout missle warrning (you should know when sometimes is). Your missles can be also missguided at your flares - have it on mind, esspecially when shrikes are chasing you.

Use CC while you aren't busy at the moment.

If You are Bombardier:
Mark strategic targets (eg vpad) in your CC (right click > attack > VCA), to allow You attack them before You see them.

Scan you view for enemy MPB (they can't be marked from CC)

If you see MPB (cant be marked in CC while deployed), mark it by targeting laster, but do it after you drop bombs. You can also mark other targets, or fieldpoints. Be shure that you marked close enough to mpb, than say VTM, pilot should know you marked important target.

Do not waste firepower to fire belly turret, it is useless when attacking ground, it's only useful in dogfight. ONLY.Never use it for attack anything expect shrike/thundersword/havoc (btw havoc can be easly hit by bombs in air). Never try to shoot at infatry with turret. Sometimes is better to drop bombs than trying get rid off shrike on tail, you should have sense.

Tell others about destroyed stuff (eg VEV, VER, VET). Zoom at vpads/turrets/sensors/etc if they're destroyed, to let pilot know if he should aim at them.

Try to concentrate bomb-power while attacking heavly armored stuff (MPB, vpads, turrets), and try to spread bombs while attacking infatry or landspike turret field.

Use CC while you aren't busy at the moment.

Bombing isn't just dropping bombs.

Pilot TIPS were wrote many times in other threats

Farming

Can't be emphasized enough; everybody (regardless of favorite position) should know how to farm *both* effectively and quickly.

Truth be told...the farmer is often the most unsung player who is most responsible for his/her team's success. They keep the base operational. Invos + sensors out. Their job is *not* to fight the incoming rape train, but to FARM. To FIX things (and toss repair kits to LoF/HoFs). Step into any pub, and watch for a non-noobie farmer; I am willing to wager that the enemy team will have a more difficult time against yours if there is a FULL TIME (i.e., the whole map) farmer on yours.

Even though the spike turrets are ridiculously weak and slow, put them up anyway; even though the base turrets in Classic are slow, repair them anyway.

Why?

Because even though a turret may not "kill" an enemy; they DO help wearing them down to the point where a defense can (more) easily kill them. To NOT do so says to me (an MO/HO base raper) "come on into our base and make yourself at home while you smack the shit out of us noobs)."

To which I (and every other player that I know of) replies, "Well thank you; I would love to traipse over there and spank the living dog shit out of you while you feebly try to defend your flag against our cappers."

Getting the point yet?

Nothing irritates a base raper/offensive player more than seeing turrets go down and are (quickly) repaired again. Same goes for putting out spikes, (motion + pulse) sensors, and deployable cameras...especially after we'd just blown them up.

Why?

Because as I previously stated, those deployables work to wear down our health and armors; sometimes multiple runs are needed to take down a base's defense. If we'd went through tearing down your base, but got killed in the process, to respawn and come back to a newly-farmed (and repaired base) is somewhat disheartening and....aggrevating. And we (the offensive team), have to re-start the process all over again.

In the meantime, an offensive player is being highlighted sooner (because of your deployed sensors), are shot sooner and more often (because of your spikes and repaired base turrets).

This in turn helps your team's stability as you are in a stronger position to attack the enemy as they will now be forced to react to your attacks. Note: notice the quieter side is the one that usually wins...isn't a mistake; it merely shows that the more stable defensive team is the one that is more able to deal with incoming enemies.

So the moral is to do your part and keep a lookout of when your team is not farming in pubs. If you see no such farmer, then you now know what to do. You will NOT have the highest score at the end of the game, but you will know that your efforts and actions were directly contributed to the success of your team when the match ends....because it was through you that held the team together in the first place.

You can still do your part to help your farmer out, even if you aren't the one farming. If you are HO/MO you can put out fresh invos at the beginning of every new run. LD s can make sure the MPB (if available) is deployed. Everyone can repair gens and permanent invos. For extra good measure...place a beacon near something that is repaired, so that your teammates do not have to scramble around for a working invo when they respawn.

Questions like these plague me. I understand that 95% of these answers can be learned through practice. What I want to understand is the nuances of combat.
